Wisconsin's transition from five to seven area codes takes another step next month, with its newest area code slated to be activated next year.
The 920 and 715 area codes are running out of numbers. The Public Service Commission last year authorized creation of two new area codes.
In a letter this week to local governments posted on the PSC's Web site, the commission said that beginning Oct. 17, callers in the 715 area code may start using 10-digit dialing - including the area code - to connect calls within the area code. Ten-digit dialing will become mandatory in August, a month after the new 534 area code is activated.
In the 920 area code, the new 274 area code is slated to be activated in 2012, the PSC said, with 10-digit dialing slated to begin in May 2011.
